Lady Gaga in Retrospect

When it comes to Lady Gaga, you can never tell what she’ll pull next. She may be known for her hits “Bad Romance”, “Paparazzi”, and “Just Dance”, but she’s even more famous for her attention-seeking, eye-popping fashion.

Kermit the Frog jacket. See-through granny panties. Oversized buttons. No one can pull it off like this 24-year-old lady. With outfits so unique and outlandish, no one would dare outplay her when it comes to fashion. Clothing suppliers are surely having a blast on her style—it’s no surprise that some designers use her as their muse for their collections.

Fashion aside, Lady Gaga is not only making headline with her clothing style but most especially with her music. Her 2008 The Fame album hit the charts with her fresh, exciting dance songs. In an instant, the whole world was caught in a Gaga sensation. Her fame was further heightened with the release of “Bad Romance”, the lead single in her 2009 The Fame Monster album. Arguably, this song was 2009’s best pop single and best pop video. But unlike popular artists with the likes of Britney Spears and Katy Perry, Lady Gaga is not particularly attractive, but she uses this to her advantage. She’s still largely unrecognizable from time to time as she disguises and masks her face, but this she does with great advantage to her fame and success.

Without a doubt, Gaga’s fame isn’t only on her records but her art and the way she presents her look—robotic dance moves, elaborate costumes, and fashion jewelry as if she took every accessory available in a wholesale fashion jewelry store to decorate her body.

And yet, people know less, if not nothing, of her private life. Her fashion doesn’t reflect the ups and downs of her personal life. Rather, she is whoever she wants to be at a given time.

Music-wise, her The Fame Monster album carried songs that are subtler, more lighthearted, and better-rounded. She morphs into other artists in her songs: ABBA (Alejandro), Christina Aguilera (Teeth), and Britney Spears (Telephone) to name a few. Although she loves playing with personas in her records, the result is a music totally her own. The songs feel like they were written and arranged simply to fit her personality.

The real question now is will Lady Gaga keep up with her popularity? Maybe she will, or maybe she’ll get chomped up with all the fuss around. But for the meantime, she is the only pop star shining bright around. At least for a brief time, she has proven that she is a budding new Madonna rather than simply a new Katy Perry.
