London will be hosting the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and construction for the Olympic venue is ongoing. Although there has been some news about cutting the budget, the Mayor of London has been adamant about keeping the exact budget. Everybody knows that the successful delivery of the 2012 Olympics will give London and the whole country a once-in-a-lifetime chance to showcase itself to the world. And they are doing everything to make it a success. And though it may still be two years away, they have chosen world-renowned Stella McCartney to be the creative director for the British Olympic team. McCartney will add glamor and will add a touch of haute couture to the Team GB’s kit.

It is Ms McCartney’s task to head the Team GB’s Adidas ranges. She will make the teamwear for all the competing athletes in the London-based games in 2012. According to Team GB’s long-time sponsor Adidas, McCartney would be overseeing the performance wear, the village wear and a retail range for the purchasing public. The team uniforms’ challenge to McCartney is for her to create a team uniform that will look good, feel good as well as work-technically for the athletes. Meaning fashion should not get in the way of the athletes winning their medals. According to a statement of Stella McCartney, “The main thing I want do is not in any way get involved with making their performance not its best.”

This means that she has to work with fabrics that will ensure that the team uniforms does not in any way hinder the performance of the athlete. Take for example British Olympic and World Champion cyclist Victoria Pendleton who has given her approval and has said that an important sign is being laid down. She believes that since they are the host nation and it is important to set the standards, the presence of a leading British designer of McCartney’s caliber inputting in the British kit is really special. The opening ceremony garments will be designed by Next which is also one of London Olympic Games sponsor. And Ms McCartney has until early 2012 to design the athlete’s kit and team uniforms but has worked on the Team GB-inspired retail range which the public can purchase.
